The Missiles Affected
The weapons most impacted by the drawdown are the US Army's primary surface-to-surface capabilities:
Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS): An older but highly effective long-range precision strike missile.
Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM): The newer, next-generation replacement for the ATACMS.
In addition to surface-to-surface missiles, a recent report by the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates that the US has expended roughly 65% of its Patriot interceptor missiles and at least 38% of its THAAD interceptors. Sources also suggest that nearly half of the global stockpile of Tomahawk cruise missiles may have been used.
The Strategic Reason
The heavy reliance on these expensive (over $1 million each), highly capable munitions reflects the administration's preference for long-range precision strikes. By launching these weapons from a distance, the US has been able to minimize the need for riskier, piloted bombing missions, thereby keeping fighter pilots out of heavily defended Iranian airspace.
The White House Response
The White House has pushed back against the reports. In a recent statement, President Donald Trump denied that the US is facing a shortage, asserting that the nation possesses "far more munitions than anyone in the world" and "far more than we need". Trump noted that US defense companies are currently expanding their plants and producing munitions at "record levels".
However, military analysts and defense officials have expressed concern that these specific stockpiles are slow to replenish. PrSM inventories were already limited because the weapon is relatively new, and ATACMS production is actively being phased out. Officials worry that the dwindling supply of long-range missiles could hamper the US military's ability to deter other major adversaries, such as Russia and China, in the near future.
